(VIDEO) Cardinal Burke: Consistory Was a “Great Benefit,” Concerns Raised Over Papal Workload
The Cardinal suggests that the meeting format be “re-examined” to ensure it respects the nature of an extraordinary consistory.
ROME, 15 January 2026 — Cardinal Raymond Burke has said he welcomed the opportunity for cardinals to meet each other, get to know one another and express their concerns about the Church at the January 7-8 extraordinary consistory.
It was a “great benefit” he said, adding that he was pleased that Pope Leo XIV plans to host more such meetings in the future, with the next consistory set for June 27-28.
In this January 11 video interview with The College of Cardinals Report, His Eminence also discusses how the meeting format could be improved, the disadvantages of the small-group approach as compared with the classical structure of an extraordinary consistory, and one of the issues raised at the meeting: concern that the Pope is being given too many activities and meetings, drawing him away from his most essential obligations.
